President Jimmy Carter (1924 – 2024)

Jimmy Carter, the 39th President of the United States, passed away on 29 December at the age of 100.

In his Nobel Peace Prize lecture, President Carter mentioned Albert Schweitzer as one of the notable laureates whose work he admired.

In 2006, Carter joined the honorary board of The Albert Schweitzer Institute at Quinnipiac University.

Carter's association with Schweitzer's legacy was further cemented in 2007 when he received the inaugural Albert Schweitzer Humanitarian Award. This honour recognised his ongoing commitment to nuclear non-proliferation and his humanitarian work through The Carter Center.

His state funeral will be held on 9 January at Washington National Cathedral.
