APC Coalition Objectives

One of the largest but most under-addressed drivers of global warming is industrial animal agriculture. Improving conditions in animal agriculture not only reduces greenhouse gas emissions, but also conserves water, curbs deforestation, and limits pollution—demonstrating that animal welfare and environmental protection are mutually reinforcing and essential to achieving climate and sustainability objectives.

Through the following objectives, we aim to address the current shortcomings in the UK's animal welfare system:

1. To establish a centralised, independent governmental body with authority to set, enforce, and improve animal welfare standards across the UK.

2. To address the longstanding influence of industries that may compromise animal welfare, such as intensive animal agriculture, on policy-making processes.

3. To overcome the current fragmented approach to animal welfare governance, which has led to inconsistencies in enforcement and a "postcode lottery" of animal welfare services.

4. To provide a body with legislative and enforcement powers, moving beyond the advisory nature of existing committees.

5. To align animal welfare policies and practices with public sentiment, which strongly supports stronger animal welfare protections.

6. To improve living conditions and treatment of animals across various sectors, including farms, laboratories, and domestic environments.

7. To enhance public confidence in how animal welfare issues are managed in the UK.

8. To contribute to environmental sustainability efforts and potentially improve public health through better food safety and quality standards.

9. To reassert the UK's position as a leader in animal welfare standards internationally, potentially influencing global practices.

10. To demonstrate a commitment to the ethical treatment of animals that aligns with evolving societal values.
